An easy to grow member of the knotweed family, Japanese Indigo is a great option for those looking for a natural blue dye! These seeds are carefully saved from my own dye garden in Minnesota. I never use pesticides or herbicides and all seeds are hand collected and sorted. **These seeds were harvested in 2023 for 2024 season planting**

Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria or Polygonum tinctorium) is a tender annual in most temperate locations (think peppers and tomatoes) and prefers rich soil and warm, rainy weather. I've found that starting seeds indoors gives me the best results. Leaves can be harvested after the plant is established, or cut about the top 2/3 of the plant - the remainder will grow more stems, and once you strip the leaves the stalk can be re-rooted!

The green leaves of the Japanese Indigo plant are where you will find the dye. It takes some coaxing to get a blue color from the leaves, either via a reduction method or traditional vat, but you can also use fresh leaf methods for a super easy blue dye experience I recommend Jenny Dean's Wild Color book as an excellent resource. Leaves can also be used to dye after drying!

The colors in our skeins of Garden Yarn are a permanent part of the protein structure of the wool – so no washing out! We do recommend washing in cool water with a gentle, pH neutral soap (we like Eucalan or Unicorn Fiber Rinse!). After the first wash you may see a little color in the rinse water, but rest assured that it will not significantly affect the color of the yarn.

Just like any fabric or yarn, colors may fade slightly over time, more if frequently exposed to bright sunlight. We recommend storing your creations in a dark, temperature-controlled place when not wearing or using.

In the past 2 years I have shifted to sourcing 100% of the yarn and roving I dye from the USA. I am proud to use Brown Sheep Company yarn and support their family-run Nebraska business. They buy wool from USA farmers, and the wool is a blend of Corriedales, Rambouillets, and Columbians. They are an environmentally conscious company which is very important to me.

We use time-honored processes to provide the best color to your yarn. These include the use of alum in small amounts, an aluminum based mordant (allowing the color to bind with the yarn protein). Alum is a non-toxic additive that can be found in many places (including the grocery spice aisle as a crunch enhancer for pickles!), but if you have a sensitivity to aluminum you may wish to select a color that does not use an alum base (please contact Kendra@knittyvet.com for more information).
